Set Your Mind and Keep It Set

In life plans sometimes fall apart, and so do we when we forget to set our mind on things above … meaning thinking God’s way.

If we are to think like God thinks about the “issues” of life, we have to know His Word about the subject at hand.  Learning how God feels about how we should handle rough times will help us to live His “way” instead of acting out of feelings or emotions every time things don’t go the way we hoped or planned.

The Apostle Peter didn’t like what Jesus was saying would come to pass concerning His death.  Trouble wasn’t in his plans for spreading the gospel, and the upcoming events that Jesus spoke of was the last thing he expected.

The Master turned His back to him facing the other Disciples rebuking Peter and said,

“Get behind Me, satan; for your mind is not set on God’s will or His values and purposes, but on what pleases man.”  (Mark 8:33 Amp)

Not only was life turning on him, Peter was miffed at his Teacher!  Jesus reminded him that God’s plan supersedes any other plans, desires, wishes or feelings.  If we keep our mind set on this truth, life’s setbacks are easier to handle knowing God is still in control.

“Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above
(the Heavenly things), not on things that are on the earth (which have
only temporal value).” (Colossians 3:2 Amp)

Always be mindful of this.  When someone gets on your nerves or ticks you off, don’t get mad. Instead set your mind and keep it set that you won’t give in to your emotions.  Giving into our feelings often causes us to sin, so setting our mind on NOT getting upset changes the way we respond and usually turns a situation around on our behalf.

There are no drive-through breakthroughs in the Kingdom of God, but God promises to “go through” every situation that arises in our life if we submit to His way over ours.  He will never leave, forsake or let us down.

“Let your character (your moral essence, your inner nature) … for He said, I will never (under any circumstances) desert you (nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless) nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you (assuredly not).”
(from Hebrews 13:5 Amp)

Set your mind on trusting that God’s Word, promises and plan are always the best.  Stop fighting the Holy Spirit’s help and start working with Him to enjoy a life of peace.  You’ll be surprised at how differently you approach new circumstances.
