Rejoice, Emmanuel Has Come

Verse of the Month

“Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son,
and shall call His name Immanuel – God with us.”
(Isaiah 7:14 NKJV)

Scripture Reading:  Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 19:10

Rejoice, Emmanuel Has Come

There’s no doubt that we all have a special reason for loving or not loving the season referred to as “Christmas”.   We are captivated by the wrappings, dressings and bows that present the holiday as something other than every day.  To tell the truth, that would be correct.  There is something special.

One thing that sets Christmas apart from other festive celebrations is the music that accompanies it.  The message told in the hymn “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” depicts why Christians rejoice – the victory of Christ the Messiah over the works of the enemy satan.

“O come, Thou Rod of Jesse,
Free Thine own from satan’s tyranny.
From depths of Hell Thy people save,
And give them victory o’er the grave.

However, another verse was added to the song many years later that summarizes what we share in our hearts about the Beloved Emmanuel (Immanuel).

“O come, Desire of nations, bind …
All peoples in one heart and mind;
Bid envy, strife and quarrels cease;
Fill the whole world with Heaven’s peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel.
Shall come to thee, O Israel.”

The birth of Jesus Christ binds the hearts and minds of those who receive Him as the One True Messiah.  He not only came to save Israel, but all who will believe in Him.

“She (Mary) will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus,
for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)

“For the Son of Man (Jesus) came to seek and to save the lost.”
(Luke 19:10)

Rejoice, Emmanuel the Son of God is with us. He has come to save. (cw)
