Why Did Jesus Have to Save
Us?
When
people learn that they are sinners like we learned from the woman in our last lesson, one
question that is often asked is why do we need saving? They come to some realization about not being
able to keep the Ten Commandments, but that doesn’t convince them that they are
lost and without fellowship with God.
People
in the time when Jesus walked the Earth wondered the same thing, and this is
how the Apostle Paul explained it to the citizens of Rome and surrounding
areas.
“The law of
Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful
nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent His own Son in a
body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to
sin’s control over us by giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sins.
He did this
so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no
longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.” (Romans 8:3-4 NLT)
We
are flawed having sinned against a perfect and Holy God, so Jesus did what we could
not. Being without sin and blameless, Christ became the sacrifice that was needed to cancel out the debt of sin.
“And just as
each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, so
also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins
of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring
salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for Him.”
(Hebrews 9:27-28 NLT)
Once
someone repents of their transgressions against God and accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior,
He becomes the sacrifice for their sin. They become new creations because of what He
has done to “save” us from eternal separation from God.
We
are changed by God’s grace, not our works.
Trying to keep the Law doesn’t change us, nor do our good deeds; salvation
and grace do because they connect us back to God through His Son Jesus.
To
say it simply, Jesus had to die on the cross to redeem (forgive) all sin committed against God. If He hadn’t,
no one would be able to spend eternity with Him in Heaven, and that’s why we
needed Jesus to save us. (cw)
