The Gift of the Noken

Verse of the Week

October 22nd – 31st

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 8:2-5

The Gift of the Noken

"I was overcome with emotion.  It was just a net bag, but it meant everything", David Holsten, President and CEO of MAF ministries explained in a letter.

So, what was the big deal about receiving a net bag from that man?  He explained how this "net bag" is an important tool in the life of the Papuan people who have very little in possessions.  The handmade vibrant woven sack wraps around the forehead and drapes down the back.  It is used to carry food, tools and even a baby.

The Apostle Paul understood the sacrificial giving of believers.  He wrote about the kindness of churches and their generosity in giving to his need while in Macedonia despite their own trials.

“And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.”  (2 Corinthians 8:5 NKJV)

As the Papuan man gave his gift of the precious noken, out of his lack, let us also joyfully give sacrificially for the needs of others. (cw)

“… that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.  For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willingly, imploring us with much urgency (for the favor and fellowship) that we would receive the gift and their fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.”  (2 Corinthians 8:2-5 NKJV)
