Draw Your Swords

Verse of the Month

“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles,
the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.
Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do His work and
build up the church, the body of Christ." (Ephesians 4:11-12 NLT)

Scripture Reading:  Psalm 119:11

Draw Your Swords

Primary church or children’s church as most know it by, was a special time in my life.  I can remember my mother and Mrs. Bacon sharing the gospel message through songs, stories and special games such as the Bible Drill.

Every week I would hope that we would play the Sword or Bible Drill game.  Of course, in order to win you had to be pretty good at finding your way around the Bible, which meant memorizing passages and knowing the books of the Bible in order.

I practiced and practiced so that when our teachers would say, “Draw (or put up) your Swords (the Bible), my arm would get into position to raise it in the air above the head (so people couldn't cheat).  The first one to find the passage and stand to read it would win a point.

Competition got tough, but it sure was fun.  At the time no one realized that we were being trained in the Word of God and memorizing it at the same time.

As a result, scriptures became a part of the way we thought, so when temptation came we knew if something was wrong.  Learning verses helped us not to sin against God.

Part of my responsibility as an instructor by trade is to equip students for success.  It is the same for believers.  God has gifted the Body of Christ with marvelous teachers to train Christians and parents in raising godly children for service to the Lord.

Let us be thankful for teacher’s who have taught us to “Draw Our Swords” against the wiles of the devil, by drilling the Word of God in our hearts so that we turn away from sin. (cw)
