Good to Give Thanks

Verse of the Month

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,
And Your faithfulness every night. (Psalm 92:1-2 NKJV)

November 1st – 7th, 2019

Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:18; Psalm 92

Good to Give Thanks

In America the month of November kickstarts the “season of giving thanks” for the majority of citizens.   We go the extra mile in verbalizing our gratitude for the people and things we have in our lives.

There’s nothing wrong with having a season where you are more aware of what God has done, but our reason for giving thanks should stretch beyond a few weeks out of the year.  I like how the writer of Psalm 92 explains the reason he gives praise and thanksgiving unto the Lord on a daily basis.

Each morning and night his gratitude is demonstrated through music whether it is through a song or playing an instrument.  The desire to give thanks is because of the good things God has done, not only on one particular day, but every day.

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,
And Your faithfulness every night.

On an instrument of ten strings, on the lute,
and on the harp, with harmonious sound.
For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;
I will triumph in the works of Your hands.” (Psalm 92:1-2 NKJV)

The psalmist invites us to thank God openly and privately, for when we see the work of His hands it makes us glad, happy and blessed.  Giving thanks to God for all He has given and done for us is the appropriate action we are to take as believers.

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
(1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV)

Surely, we are thankful for the blessings of food, water, clothing, shelter and loved ones.  However, the assurance of a Redeemer and salvation rises above all other good things that the Lord has done for us. (cw)
