Fighting Peer Pressure

Probably the toughest time in a student's school experience is the transition from Grade School-Jr High to High School.  Educational requirements alone change dramatically and peer pressure multiplies as the older "more experienced" kids often like to take advantage of the newbies.

In a school that I attended there was an old tower that came with lots of stories and speculation. One trick that the upperclassmen liked to pull was selling tickets to the tower.  Kids were told that they could take the stairs to the top of the tower and look out across the city (for a nominal fee of course).

There was a problem with that ... access to the mysterious tower was restricted to maintenance only so kids lost their quarter or fifty-cents.  The principal put a stop to the trickery, but it did exist for many years before the staff caught on to what the older kids were doing to their underclassmen.

In this age there are other types of peer pressure that are not quite so innocent, and your child needs to be prepared ahead of time.  It is important for parents to do their homework in the things they will be facing such as drugs, smoking, drinking, sex and bullying.  Teach them to:

"Seek His (God's) will in all you do,
and He will show you which path to take."
(Proverbs 3:6 NLT)

Like anything else that involves change, transition can be a tough time for children, and it may cause them to give in to peer pressure that they may not have in the past.  Parents don't panic, but prepare in prayer.

Let your children know that in spite of what they are going through, God still has good plans for them.  Encourage them to stay in faith and pray during times of testing and peer pressure.

Remind them to ask the Lord for direction and power to say no every time new challenges arise that go against the Word of God. (jw/cw)

"For I know the plans I have for you says the LORD.
They are plans for good and not for disaster (evil),
to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11 NLT)
