A Prayer to Love

On the National Day of Prayer (the first Thursday in May) millions of Americans will gather at church, work, schools, government buildings and home uniting in prayer for our country.  No matter what we may be experiencing in our personal lives, it does not relieve us of the responsibility to pray for our nation and leaders.

Over the past few decades America has become a nation where it has forgotten its first love for Christ, and as a result has failed to love one another as our Lord commanded.

“A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” (John 13:34 NKJV)

Here are 5 things to pray over not just on the National Day of Prayer, but everyday.

1. Pray for America to love one another like Christ loved us.

“Love one another. Just as I have loved you,” (John 13:34)

2. Pray for the Body of Christ in America to love one another as a witness of God’s love for us.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,
if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

3. Pray for families, workplaces, communities and cities in America to put love first over differences that it may not hinder our testimony before the unsaved.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God,
and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”
(1 John 4:7)

4. Pray for all ethnicities and people that they might come to know Christ through our example of Christ’s love.

“Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth.
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures
all things. Love never ends.” (1 Corinthians 13:6-8)

5. Pray for the spiritual awakening of America.  That we will love God and one another so much that other nations see we are united and agree that we are one nation under one God, Jesus Christ.

“Besides this, since you know the time, it is already the hour for
you to wake up from sleep, because now our salvation is nearer
than when we first believed.” (Romans 13:11)

This year let’s change how we love through prayer and by doing what Jesus commanded in John 13:34. (cw)
