Flag of Honor

This week many homes in America will be displaying flags on June 14^th honoring the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official US flag in 1777.  Like all nation flags, they have seen battles, wars, defeats and triumphs.

During National Flag week the USA president will encourage people to display their flag proudly in honor of what it represents - freedom.  However, there is another aspect that needs to be included in this tradition.  We often forget our brave troops behind a nation’s flag, who represent the people, country and government rights.   

The bible reminds us that the days of a life are spread out and prepared by the Lord before we are born.  This includes a soldier.

“The days of my life were spread out before You.  The days of my life are prepared before I'd ever lived one day.”  (Psalm 139:16b MSG)

He alone knows the beginning from the end, yet these individuals choose to go to battle not knowing what might become of them.  Realizing this, shouldn’t the waving of a flag mean more to us?

When you hang a flag in honor of your country, pray for the soldiers.  Remember that it is a flag of honor for all it represents, both nation and people.

Give thanks for their commitment.  Ask God to strengthen and protect those in active duty along with their families.  May the Lord hear your prayers in times of trouble. (cw)
