The Measure of Greatness

June is generally a month when America pays tribute to great men such as our fathers and those who have accomplished great things for their communities or country.  Recently President Trump called the attention to someone he felt was deserving of honor by rewarding him with the prestigious Medal of Freedom award.

Race car team owner Roger Penske has indeed accomplished many things including earning various racing titles, which will no doubt make him Hall of Fame worthy.  Although winning titles or awards does make us feel good about ourselves, achieving “things” isn’t what God measures as great.

When the Lord created Mr. Penske, God knew that he would succeed in the field of racing, because the days of his life were already prepared before he was born.  It’s that way for all mankind.

The Bible tells us about a select group of men and women in Hebrews chapter 11 that caused them to stand out from others.  None of these people were “great” in the heart of the Lord because of their abilities, but because of the depth of their faith.

They understood that the world and everything in it including themselves were framed, created, drafted into something special by God before anyone saw anything physically.  It was the eye of faith that let them see what no one else saw, that increased their faith and hope in the promises of God.

God already knows what we can or cannot do with the skills, talents and abilities He’s given us.  He’s looking for that something which connects them to Him in a more personal way.  These “great” people trusted God as their LORD and Savior.  That is what God sees as greatness in an individual.

“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible." (Hebrews 11:3 NKJV)

How do people measure your greatness?  Are they looking on the outward things that reflect your gifts and talents, or do they see your faith and trust in the God who gave you those gifts? (cw)
