Why Pastors Need Your Prayers

Faith Moments Daily Bible Reading and Online Devotionals

The month of October in the United States among religious circles, focuses on pastor or clergy appreciation.  I wish there was a way to proclaim how vital it is that people pray for those who have spirtually taught them about the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

I can recall this as if it were yesterday.  Several years ago Pastor Jim has just finished preaching, and we were packing up to go home when I saw two women sitting at the back of the room.

As I approached the ladies I noticed one had a bewildered look on her face and was eager to speak to us.  "Ladies is there something I can do for you?"  I asked.

"Yes" one of the ladies responded.  About then Pastor Jim was standing next to me when she said, "Pastor, I know how to be born, and I know how to die, but I don't know how to live!"  That was a loaded statement and we had no clue to where this would go.

She continued explaining her situation and for the next hour we counseled and prayed with both ladies.  My point isn't the fact that this woman poured her heart out to us, but that she was desperate and came to a pastor she did not know for answers she did not receive from other ministers.

Friends, pastors and clergy need your prayers.  They are often placed in positions where they do not know the individuals, yet are expected to have all the answers.

Like everyone else pastors are human, also facing intense spiritual warfar, carry emotional burdens and are accountable not only to the congregation, elders and family, but accountable before God for their actions and teachings.  That is a lot of responsibility and regular prayer is the key foundation that helps them to keep going when they are frustrated and need answers just like that lady.

I am here to tell you, as a pastor and counselor, we do not know all the answers to your questions.  This is why we highly value your prayers and seek the Lord for wisdom, discernment and counsel in delivering any message.

A true shepherd of a flock has a heart for the individuals that walk through their church doors.  They hurt when you hurt, grieve when you grieve and cry when you cry.  They have a heart of God for God's people, and because of that we truly need to uplift them in prayer on a regular basis, not just pastor/clergy appreciation month.

Give a word of encouragement to your pastor or spiritual leaders in your life.  Let them know you appreciate and value what they do, and are praying for them to keep doing the Lord's work.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."           (Galations 6:9)
