Sacrifices
of Thanksgiving
During my devotions while reading a psalm, I came across a phrase that I thought might cause others to wonder as I
did … “What does it mean to give a
sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the Lord and how do I do it?”
To better understand the concept of sacrificial thanksgiving we’ll be looking at a few examples in our Faith Moments Devotional Bible Studies. Throughout the month we'll focus on a few ways to offer a continual sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the Lord.
Let’s begin with the offering of
self as a living sacrifice of thanksgiving.
We can look to the psalms as a good starting place on ways to do this.
“Let them praise the Lord for His great love
and for the wonderful things He has done for them.
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving
and sing joyfully about His glorious acts.”
and for the wonderful things He has done for them.
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving
and sing joyfully about His glorious acts.”
(Psalm 107:21-22 NLT)
What does a living sacrifice
actually look like? In order to become
living sacrifices, we have to be fully transformed into the image of God. This is something that we work on doing and dedicate
our entire life to, not just for a specific time, that will allow us to live in
continual thanksgiving unto the Lord.
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead
with you to give your bodies
to God because of all He has done for you.
Let them be a living and holy sacrifice — the kind
He will find
acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him.
Don’t copy the behavior and customs
of this world,
but let
God transform you into a new person by changing
the way you think. Then you will learn to know
God’s will for you,
which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:1-2 NLT)
God has given us the gift of
salvation, healing, renewed mind, preservation, newness of life and much more. In Romans 12:1-2 the author expresses that because
of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we are to offer our thanks and appreciation
by dying to our old nature.
By giving ourselves over to the
Lord completely, we become the “sacrifice” for the work of the Lord and
voluntarily present ourselves to Him for whatever God wants to do through us at
all times. The more we give our time to
Christ the more we become transformed into His image, because we have literally
given up our ways of thinking and doing things so we can be more like Him.
This week discipline yourself to
stay committed to the work of the Lord by saying no to self, and yes to sharing
your testimony of how Christ saved you. Start
today by offering sacrifices of thanksgiving.
Begin each morning with a song
about the glorious things of God. Then tell
others of His great love and the things He has done in your life. Let this be the beginning of your living a sacrificial
lifestyle that pleases the Lord. (cw)
