Scripture
Reading: Romans 13
One Life that Lasts
“The
night is far spent, the day is at hand:
let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the
armor of light” (Romans 13:12).
When
I was in high school, one of my teachers had a sign taped under the clock that
read, “Attention all clock watchers.
Time will pass, but will you?” The
message that he was trying to get across was that when we look to see how much
time we have left, we waste the time that we have.
Time
is an awesome thing. The passing of time
causes happiness in the life of a teenager who is just weeks away from getting
their driver’s license. This same
passing of time causes sadness in so many who are alone and lonely, feeling
that time has passed them by and that their future looks bleak. Time works for us and against us. It is our friend when we use it wisely and
our foe when we waste it.
My
mother had a wall plaque that hung in our dining room. It said, “Only one life will soon be past.
Only what is done for Christ will last.”
Those words really make you take stock of the things that we consider
“important”.
As
the days of this age are coming to a close, and the day of Christ’s call of
“Come up hither” (Revelation 4:1) gets closer and closer, we need to take a
look at how we are using our time. All
believers still have the opportunity to utilize their time wisely for the Lord
through witnessing, prayer, praise and worship, and supporting ministries that
preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We
need to take our eyes off of the clock and fix them on Jesus.
