Verse of the Week

“And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as My Father promised.

But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you

with power from Heaven.”  (Luke 24:49 NLT)

Jesus Sent

All of us, at one time or another, have been over-anxious, excited, and even impatient concerning a promised upcoming event or special day.  When I was a child, I could think of nothing else other than how to hasten the time until the big day.  My parents would tell me to be patient and stay put until the event, which sort of helps me relate to how exited the disciples must have been with what Jesus said to them.

The Savior had risen from the grave as He had promised.  However, Jesus told them to stay in the city and wait.  They were filled with anticipation as to what would happen next, gathering together every day in preparation for the Holy Spirit's arrival.

Acts chapter 2 tells us that the believers had been obedient and didn't wander off beforehand.  The promise of the Holy Spirit came upon them and filled them with the power that Jesus had told them in a wonderful way.

“And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as My Father promised.

But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you

with power from Heaven.”  (Luke 24:49 NLT)

By being obedient, the disciples were able to minister in a way that they had never imagined, and set the stage for those of us who were to follow to receive that same Holy Spirit of God.  They learned that waiting on the Lord certainly pays off not rushed.

That same promise from the Father is still for those who believe in Jesus as God’s Risen Son.  Ask the Holy Spirit to come fill you with power from Heaven as Jesus sent it to the first believer’s, and receive the free gift that accompanies your salvation. (jw/cw)
