Besides the Pulpit

Our focus for October is: Clergy and Pastor Appreciation Month, Columbus Day, Halloween, Wisdom.

"Call unto Me, and I will answer you,
and show you great and might things,
which you did not know."
Jeremiah 33:3

During the month of October congregations around the world give honor to those who have faithfully sought the Lord for wisdom into the scriptures.  In our imagination, we picture them having a direct line to God who gives them answers to anything they ask.

We expect that they have spent countless hours before God's throne seeking wisdom and counsel into each pressing sermon and message they are to convey to their flock.  Our hope is that they would gain insight and be shown great and mighty things that they did not know concerning the Word.

It is true that we take comfort in knowing our spirituals leaders hear from God, but what about those who are not in the clergy or ministry?  What about our political leaders, those in business, those who teach our children and those who are in search for better things beyond what we can imagine?

For years I have expressed the importance of praying for those who seek the will of God in all aspects of life and how they will affect and effect the world.  I have often asked this question, "What if Columbus did not go?"  His life is an example of what God is willing to share with His children if we only dare to ask Him to reveal the wisdom of Heaven to those who call on Him in prayer.

As were celebrate and honor the faithfulness of our spiritual leaders, besides the pulpit, let us also give thanks to those who have changed the lives of others throughout the generations spiritually in their desire to serve God.

Here are our few of our FMD favorites on this topic:

Focusing on Prayer

Our focus for May seems appropriate since it has begun with the National Day of Prayer for the United States.  The event is based on Romans 15:13, which has three points of focus: hope, joy and peace through the power given to all believers by the Holy Spirit of God.

"Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13

With so much negativity, discouragement, and thoughts of despair, we need to spread the message about the "God of Hope" who will meet every need spiritually, physically, financially, emotionally, and socially.  God is our hope, our only hope and to Him we lift our voices humbly in prayer for our nation and the world.

For more focused devotionals on prayer, please visit our National Day of Prayer topic.

Reveal the Deep Things God

"Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law".
(Psalm 119:18 NKJV)

 Scripture Reading:  1 Corinthians 2:6-10; Psalm 119:18

Reveal the Deep Things God

It is no secret that the more time you spend with someone the better you become acquainted with their ways.  The same goes for spending time in fellowship with God through the reading of His word and in prayer.

As you enter into your study time ask the Lord to reveal the deep things of God to you.  Pray that your eyes will be opened to the wondrous things from the Word of God. (cw)

"But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit".
1 Corinthians 2:10 NKJV)

"Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law".
(Psalm 119:18 NKJV)

“However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor the rules of this age, who are coming to nothing.

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.  But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.

But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit.  For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. (1 Corinthians 2:6-10 NKJV)

How Would You Answer these Questions?

As I am sitting at the computer writing this the sounds of thunder roars in the distance as the city siren is sounding and my phone alarm is telling us to take cover.  Another storm is in the area with warnings of a tornado threatening the city. With so much destruction from wars, violence, hatred, and "natural disasters, the "world" is seeking counsel from people of faith for answers.

For a believer, these things are part of the "tribulation" of this world. The only difference is that we understand why they are happening and have the peace gift from God to help us overcome each situation.

"In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I (Jesus speaking) have overcome the world."
 John 16:33

Some of the most common religious questions asked (especially around Easter) are "Do You Believe Jesus Is Alive?"  and if He is, why does He allow so many bad things to happen?

Another is, did Jesus die only to forgive sins of believers?  If someone asked you these difficult life questions, how would you answer?  For more insight read our holiday devotional on this subject.

Breaking Follow Ground

Feature Devotional of the Month

“Break up your follow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD.”
Hosea 10:12

Scripture Reading: Hosea 10:12

Ground Breaking

This is the time of year where many of us begin to prepare our soil to receive the new seeds for this year’s crops.  The winter hardened the ground where nothing could grow.  The spring thaw has given us a new opportunity to sow, in hope for the ground to bring forth what was sown.
Through the years many Christians seem to form opinions and have hardened themselves to certain ways of thinking.  Their once fertile ground has become hardened and prevents them from hearing from God.  This is the time of ground breaking for believers by seeking the Lord and His wisdom.  Be determined that this year you will allow new seeds to be planted in your heart, so you can receive God’s best and be fruitful in your planting.
“Break up your follow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD.”
Hosea 10:12
